Opera: 'La Fiamma'

By WILL CRUTCHFIELD
Published: December 6, 1987
"LEAD: ''LA FIAMMA,'' the most successful of Ottorino Respighi's operas, came to New York Friday night -apparently for the first time - in a Carnegie Hall concert performance by the Collegiate Chorale under Robert Bass. It is a tale of witchcraft and forbidden love set in Byzantine Ravenna, orchestrated with the lush resourcefulness we expect from the author of ''The Pines of Rome.

''LA FIAMMA,'' the most successful of Ottorino Respighi's operas, came to New York Friday night -apparently for the first time - in a Carnegie Hall concert performance by the Collegiate Chorale under Robert Bass. It is a tale of witchcraft and forbidden love set in Byzantine Ravenna, orchestrated with the lush resourcefulness we expect from the author of ''The Pines of Rome.'' Appearing near the end of Italian opera's creative lifespan, it made the rounds of international introduction in the mid-1930's, but its good reception then did not lead to many postwar revivals.

The Carnegie performance suggested that a beautifully designed, intensely acted stage production of ''La Fiamma'' could surely be a success. It's less likely that the score could become one of those that audiences want to hear often over the years with new interpreters and productions. Respighi, like his contemporary Riccardo Zandonai, was in the fatal position of working in an idiom that promises melody and having little to offer.

Moreover, his emotional sympathies extend incompletely over the range of feelings in the story. He evokes the gloom of the palace; he captures both the mild and the severe aspects of religious feeling; he finds striking music at times for the horror to which Silvana (daughter of a witch, wedded to the spellbound Exarch of Ravenna) was born. The scene in which she begins to embrace her curse in Act II has gripping passages. But ''La Fiamma'' lacks warmth in the love music and tension in the personal confrontations (this is crippling at the end). It is more a tone poem descriptive of time and place than a musical enactment of events and pasisons.

The performance was satisfying only in part, and most of the part came from the singing of Alessandra Marc as Silvana. Her voice is full, beautiful, creamy at times. Her tone is pure: it does not have the overripe, pushed vibrato that afflicts so many singers in weighty operatic roles today. Miss Marc also has a feel for the soaring curves of Puccinian lyrical writing. She is generous with portamento, and she lets her feelings into her singing. One would not be surprised if Zinka Milanov had been one of her models.

So the young singer gave great pleasure, even if there were limitations on it. One fault she shared with others in the cast was mushy, darkened diction. And - remembering how many of today's frayed mid-career dramatic singers sounded good when they started - one worried a little that her high notes were so much louder than the upper middle ones, and that she seemed unable to soften them. A little lower down, her soft singing was wonderfully poised.

If all this describes her voice more than her portrayal of the role, it is partly because all the portrayals were hampered Friday. The singers stood behind the orchestra; they could not establish even a concert ''stage presence.'' Mr. Bass was not a quarter as careful as he should have been about keeping the orchestra and singers in balance. He had big-voiced singers all around, so they were heard, but immediacy of dialogue was lost. And having overplayed the maximum-volume card early on, he spent much of the evening repeatedly trying to trump the last overdone climax.

James McCracken, Andrew Smith, Mignon Dunn and Jane Shaulis had the other main roles, as (respectively) Silvana's stepson and lover Donello, the Exarch, the Exarch's mother and Agnese, who is executed for witchcraft in Act I. Given their propensities and the circumstances of the evening, it is hardly news to report that they sang with more force than musicality. But they delivered in committed, confident fashion, especially Mr. McCracken. This was not one of those concert operas in which a few stars lend their names to a little-known score and leave the impression that it remains little-known even for them. One sensed serious effort here and was grateful for it, even if one wished it otherwise channeled.
Prominent among the many smaller parts were those taken by Delcina Stevenson, Lynnen Yakes and Kevin Deas. The part taken by the chorus in this score is large, and Mr. Bass's chorale came through handsomely. The haunting song of Rosamonda, sung by the maidservants in the first act, was a highlight of the performance as well as of the score."

Ah, mais effectivement j'ai ça ! Mr. Green

Like a Star @ heaven
